Segullah

Segullah, a journal designed to encourage literary talent, provoke thought and promote greater understanding and faith among Latter-day Saint women. They publish insightful writings which explore life’s richness and complexity while reflecting faithfulness to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Their aim is to highlight a variety of women’s perspectives within a framework of shared beliefs and values.

I came across this publication from one of my clients. Rebecca Wagstaff sent me the Winter 2009 issue which featured her artwork. Her art was both on the front & back covers in full color as well as six B&W images inside the issue.

Thanks Rebecca for sharing this publication.

October Desktop Calendar

OK, here it is! Maybe a day late but hey, it wasn't until today that the artists started turning in their paintings for our Plein Air Provo competition & exhibit. And it's kinda tough providing an image for an exhibit calendar that has not even been painted yet! If you can get here tonight (2 Oct.) we're open for the Gallery Stroll from 6 - 9 PM. We'd love to see you during the stroll but I know there are a few other activities happening. If not tonight, make sure to stop in during the month. We have some fresh, wonderful paintings of Provo. Download this image for free and enjoy using it as you computer desktop pattern.

See you in the gallery.

Milky Way Center Region Mosaic

OK, so I learned of this Galactic Center Mosaic site the other day and it has some wonderful images. When I'm outside at night I sure don't see all these stars but they are there. Take a look and use the zoom & pan tools at the bottom. I'm not sure how you will feel after viewing the images but as for me, well I seem pretty small.

Paintball Pop Art

OK, so I found this link on the Make web site. It is amazing what these guys do with paintballs! We've had our fun here in the gallery with Cristall Harper painting but it was nothing like this.

Hope you enjoyed watching this fun "painting" session! See you in the gallery soon.

Cristall Harper In-Gallery Painting V3

One last time Cristall was here in the gallery painting during her exhibit. On each of the three weeks she has created a wonderful painting. Each one was different and exciting. And this week was no exception. As you can see in the image she went from mixing paint, to sharing with gallery visitors, to finished painting.

Almost complete

If for some chance you have not yet seen her exhibit come on down! Tulips closes on the 25th of September.

See you in the gallery soon.

Cristall Harper In-Gallery Painting

We had a great time on the 9th with Cristall here in the gallery painting. As you can see she brought a prepared surface and then started painting.

As she painted various patrons stopped by and watched the process. I myself always enjoy watching the painting come together. As a photographer (and a husband who is not even allowed to paint the walls with a large roller!) painters and sculptors to me work magic!

Enjoy these images. Cristall may be posting more on her blog so give that a check.

She will be back again on the 16th from 3 - 6 pm and on the 23rd also. Mark your calendars and stop in, watch her paint and enjoy the exhibit.

Wonderful Exhibit Opening & Gallery Stroll

Friday night the 3rd of July, while most of Provo was out saving places out along the parade route, we opened Short Cuts: Papercutting. There was a great crowd here in the gallery and two of the four exhibiting artists were here. Randel McGee and Cindy Ferguson were both here and had a wonderful evening visiting old & new friends & family in the gallery. Cindy and some of her friends brought the most wonderful refreshments! If you were here you know what I am speaking about. If you weren't, too bad you missed some wonderful treats.

As I was busy with the opening I failed to take any pics. However, both Randel & Cindy did and here are links to their blogs. Take a look & leave a message, enjoy.

I participated with Marilyn Noble (Managing Editor) & Nancy DeCamillis (Publisher/Executive Editor) of Sculptural Pursuit Magazine in their monthly internet radio blog "Photographing Your Sculpture." You can still listen to and leave comments about the broadcast in the archive. Just follow the link below. In their next magazine issue, July 2009, I will have a article about photographing sculpture. Look for it on newsstands around the end of July. The radio blog was a fun time and hopefully we were able to help their listeners.

Tidbit Tuesday

What can you create with a hole? This image of Maeser Elementary was created with a hole, in specific a pinhole!

Pinhole photography involves using a light-tight container of some type for the camera, a light sensitive media (film or photographic paper) to receive the image, and a "pinhole" to act as a lens to allow light to enter and form the image on the light sensitive material. Pinhole cameras have taken almost every shape and size. Before the advent of light sensitive material, people as far back as the fifth century BC have understood and used the "pinhole" principles. Aristotle and da Vinci among others understood and used pinholes.

No lens, no glass, no Photoshop!

Winter Afternoon is a scene from the mountains of New Hampshire. In my earlier life, I spent many happy days cross-country skiing in New Hampshire. I was trying to capture the feeling of a cold, sunny day in the mountains.

Tidbit Tuesday

As seen on a Terra Nova Gallery water bottle:

Random facts about things you already know

Lincoln Logs were invented by John Lloyd Wright, the son of Frank Lloyd Wright. He got the idea from a building technique his father used in designing Tokyo's Imperial hotel.

The interior in Carnation is a room on the second floor of my great-grandfather's home built around 1870. It is the David McKay home, birthplace of David O. McKay, historically registered in Huntsville, Utah.

The one-armed chair depicted was a gift from my grandfather to my grandmother. He bought it for her because he thought that she loved it and she kept it because she thought that he loved it. Years later, it was discovered that they both disliked it.
