Blue Horse in Sunlight

My painting friends and I headed to Wallsburg to do some Plein Air painting late last summer. There ended up being some scattered showers, and we spent some time driving around taking photos before we were able to paint. One location was really intriguing to me. The way the light was hitting the trees, and the backlit horse eating in the field. I knew I wanted to paint this scene, but the challenge would be getting the lighting right. I worked it and reworked it, trying to get the colors, values, and lighting correct. Being able to paint a horse blue was an added bonus, and a lot of fun.

Bird on a Watermelon

Bird on a Watermelon was a fun painting to do. The watermelon turned out to be a strong visual and I couldn't resist painting that bird with his expression. I didn't know if the viewer would think that the bird was just resting on the melon or thought it was trying to hatch it. The vibrant colors and quirky subjects are why this is one of my favorites of the show.

I was attending a Stake Conference in my church when I noticed Emma. She was with her son and husband when I noticed her turquoise earrings that she was wearing. After the meeting I went up to her and introduce myself as an artist and wanted to paint her. Emma smiled shyly and said that would be fine. Emma with her husband came to my home so that I can take pictures of her and make this painting.

Cantaloupe with Bird

Cantaloupe with Bird was fun to paint (after some frustrations) because of the different textures and surfaces. The metal spoon and white ceramic dish are both reflective. The lemons have a transparent quality with the light coming through and the cantaloupe looks nice and juicy. Then there are the birds feathers, which I didn't want to paint too tightly with every feather perfectly placed. It was fun to make him a bit more messy, like birds are. -Jenae Green

Shrine for a Green Magic Stone with Critics

McEntire scours garage sales, thrift stores and salvage yards for discarded things magical, miraculous and spiritual. Angels, crucifixes, miniature temples, vestments, scriptures, prayer and hymn books; small figures of Christ, Hindu gods, the Virgin Mary, the Angel Moroni and Buddha; also things banal: wooden boxes, farm implements, lenses, mirrors, pop icon figurines, mannequin parts, feathers, embroidered cloth, traps, cages, sticks, stones, old typewriters and bones; and things not so banal: a bird wing, a stuffed rabbit head, a World War II gas mask and a divining rod. These crowd his studio until they whisper a voice of spiritual renewal, inspiring an assemblage of objects sacred and ordinary, born again in exultant layers of the undogmatized divine: meditations, incantations, visions, blessings, celebrations, imaginations, divinations, salvations, exaltations.

This is the third piece of the series, the three Zarya's are the guardian goddesses in Slavic Mythology. Zara-Evening, closes the gates of heaven each night as the sun returns home.

As we were building this beautiful piece, Jeanne mentioned that when you get it right, you just can't quit smiling as you build a great window. The background glass is a clear that has swirls a movement throughout the glass.

I Shot an Elk!

I bet that got your attention. As I have never gone hunting, and don't know that I will, having shot an elk is a big deal! Now in all fairness the shooting I did was with a camera and I did no harm to the elk (however someone else did). My client, Steve Bartholomew does wood carving and had a base for this elk that he needed documented for a brochure. I must say, these critters are BIG! I have seen them in the wild on a number of times but with no reference to say a 3'0" door or an 8' ceiling it is hard to judge their scale. This guy was so massive that we could not even get him into my studio. I ended up shooting him next door at the Academy Real Estate office. Thanks Chuck!

They publish insightful writings which explore life’s richness and complexity while reflecting faithfulness to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Their aim is to highlight a variety of women’s perspectives within a framework of shared beliefs and values.

I came across this publication from one of my clients. Rebecca Wagstaff sent me the Winter 2009 issue which featured her artwork. Her art was both on the front & back covers in full color as well as six B&W images inside the issue.

Milky Way Center Region Mosaic

OK, so I learned of this Galactic Center Mosaic site the other day and it has some wonderful images. When I'm outside at night I sure don't see all these stars but they are there. We had a great time on the 9th with Cristall here in the gallery painting. As you can see she brought a prepared surface and then started painting.

As she painted various patrons stopped by and watched the process. I myself always enjoy watching the painting come together. As a photographer (and a husband who is not even allowed to paint the walls with a large roller!) painters and sculptors to me work magic!

Wonderful Exhibit Opening & Gallery Stroll

Friday night the 3rd of July, while most of Provo was out saving places out along the parade route, we opened Short Cuts: Papercutting. There was a great crowd here in the gallery and two of the four exhibiting artists were here. Randel McGee and Cindy Ferguson were both here and had a wonderful evening visiting old & new friends & family in the gallery. Cindy and some of her friends brought the most wonderful refreshments! If you were here you know what I am speaking about. If you weren't, too bad you missed some wonderful treats.

As I was busy with the opening I failed to take any pics. However, both Randel & Cindy did and here are links to their blogs. Take a look & leave a message, enjoy.

Tidbit Tuesday

What can you create with a hole? This image of Maeser Elementary was created with a hole, in specific a pinhole!

Pinhole photography involves using a light-tight container of some type for the camera, a light sensitive media (film or photographic paper) to receive the image, and a "pinhole" to act as a lens to allow light to enter and form the image on the light sensitive material. Pinhole cameras have taken almost every shape and size. Before the advent of light sensitive material, people as far back as the fifth century BC have understood and used the "pinhole" principles. Aristotle and da Vinci among others understood and used pinholes.

The interior in Carnation is a room on the second floor of my great-grandfather's home built around 1870. It is the David McKay home, birthplace of David O. McKay, historically registered in Huntsville, Utah.

The one-armed chair depicted was a gift from my grandfather to my grandmother. He bought it for her because he thought that she loved it and she kept it because she thought that he loved it. Years later, it was discovered that they both disliked it.

I shot these a while ago for Deveren Farley. It's fun to study his work and see all the different and varied parts and pieces that make up his sculpture. Sort of like a 3D Where's Waldo! He is always on the lookout for items to use in his sculpture. In fact, his mailman, friends, and neighbors all contribute to his supply.

Zions Bank Artists' Reception

Thursday the 6th of November I was able to attend the 11th Annual Zions Bank Artists' Reception in SLC. Six of my clients were there out of the 57 exhibits artists exhibiting.

Michael & Morgan Coleman each had some of their paintings on exhibit. Michael also had a bronze there. Morgan (pictured here) and Char (who took the pic) were representing the Coleman clan.

Marilyn Sunderland was there for the first time with her gourds. It is just amazing the work she does. You can see her work on her website: www.marilynsunderlandstudio.com

Bryan Mark Taylor was the artist who introduced us to the Zion Bank exhibit years ago. Bryan is now in CA and has wonderful plein-air paintings and his work gets better all the time. Ken Packer rounds out my clients that were on the 18th floor. Ken had his bronze work there and as you can see interested patrons talking with him. Ken's website is: burntforkbronzes.com. Hope you stop by his site and enjoy his work.

Last but in no way the least was Ben Hammond. Ben does wonderful work with the human figure and then casts in bronze. You can view more of Ben's work on his site at: www.benhammondfineart.com.

On each of the floors along with the artists were food by many different providers and live music. I need to stick in a plug for MINI'S handcrafted gourmet miniature cupcakes! WOW is all I could say. Les Madeleines also had some wonderful desserts. There were also other caterers there but you can see by my impressions I spent most of my time with the desserts!

Music was also a big part of the evening. Ridin' the Fault Line, Kirkmount & Murdock Jazz Ensemble were all favorites of mine.

What could you ask for more? Good art, food, friends & music all in one place! One great evening.

Voting update

As posted earlier, I voted early to avoid long lines. Well, as I said, Florence did not have to wait in line on election day in the morning. And my two children (who voted after I posted the blog) informed me that; Clarke voted in the afternoon without waiting, and Sara voted at 6:30pm and also had no lines to wait in!

So, all in all I'm glad I voted early, waited in line (to avoid waiting in lines) and could be of service to my family so they did not have to wait in lines! I still think it is a wonderful process and am amazed at all of it.

I Voted (EARLY)

To avoid long lines I went and voted in the morning of the 31st of October. While waiting in line I had the opportunity to chat with many new friends who were also avoiding long lines. After 40 minutes we finally made it into the poling place where we could cast our ballot for the person of our choice to represent us. It was a bit annoying to have to wait that long to "avoid the long lines" on election day. A bit annoying, but well worth the privilege of voting and taking part of the process.

This morning, Florence called me on her way to work to thank me for voting early. When I asked her how long she waited she told me the longest part was visiting with the poll worker (a neighbor) after voting! Well, I'm glad I could help someone avoid the long lines:-)

Friday night the 5th of September we opened our 5th Anniversary Exhibit during the gallery stroll. Artists participating in this exhibit exhibited with us five years ago when we opened the gallery. Hard to believe that five years have gone by since that opening. We've had wonderful exhibits, fantastic artists and great patrons & supporters of the gallery. In case you didn't make it to the opening here are a few images from that evening. The cake was very good and the art & patrons were wonderful as ever.

LARGE Paintings!

I spent the other evening in the HFAC at BYU photographing four paintings by Matt
Shurtleff. As you can see in this image, by the scale of the person in the lower corner, these are LARGE paintings. They are 12' x 39'. They will be coming down this Friday the 29th so if you want to see them you'd better hurry.

It was quite an event to capture images of these four paintings. Hope you enjoy the update. Great job Matt!

As I mentioned in my last post, here are a few more images. Nathan Bennett with a new patina painting that will be going to Munson Gallery in Santa Fa. Nathan just makes his work so rich and dimensional you could just walk right into them.

And just to keep me working on my lighting skills here in the studio, Andy Kosorok brings in his glass creations that always make me think once or twice how to best light to show his glass.

New Exhibits

We're excited here at Terra Nova Gallery. The response has been wonderful from the artists for our new Plein Air Provo exhibit! The weather looks to be great (well Friday might not be so good) and the painters are out. They will bring their newly created works of art in and the exhibit will open on Friday the 5th for the Downtown Provo Gallery Stroll. Stop in, cast your vote for the people's choice award and enjoy this wonderful exhibit.

Dahrl Thomson, one of our clients who we shoot for at Hawkinson Photography is also opening a new exhibit this Friday. Dahrl will be exhibiting with Jennifer Rasmussen at the Rose Wagner Art Gallery in Salt lake City. The exhibit will run from October 5th through December 28th, 2007.

The Rose Wagner Art Gallery is at 138 West Broadway (300 South), Salt Lake City and there is an Artist Reception on Sunday October 14th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

I've been busy shooting in the studio. Two artists that have exhibited at Terra Nova Gallery have an exhibit at the Bountiful Davis Art Center. Anne Gregerson & Marilyn Read open their exhibit Dream Dialogue on September 7th.

Anne Gregerson

Dream Dialogue features work by Anne Gregerson and Marilyn Read. Anne was born and raised in Idaho. She studied art at the Tucson Museum of Art School and Pima College in Arizona. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in sculpture at Brigham Young University in 1997. She taught art in Utah schools for several years, and now works as an artist full time in her home studio. Fired clay is her primary medium and the subject matter is most often the female human figure.

Marilyn Read

Marilyn Read is a native of Ogden, Utah. At age 20 she moved to Hawaii where she immersed herself in a melting pot of diverse cultural influences including India, the Middle East, Africa and Mexico. Her paintings reflect these powerful cultural influences. After returning to Utah she received a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Utah. Since that time she has shown her work in several one-woman exhibits and as an invited artist in shows and in galleries along the Wasatch Front.

Photography for New Exhibits

I've been pretty busy here in the studio shooting art for new exhibits.

Nathan Bennett is having an exhibit at The Meyer-Munson Gallery in Santa Fe, NM. The exhibit Nathan Bennett: Intimate Alchemy opens Friday, June 15th. There’s no one else doing what Nathan Bennett’s doing. Bennett is a master Patinuer who is creating a new path from an ancient craft. He works much like the medieval alchemist—making beauty out of average metals. Take a look at his work and I'm sure you'll be impressed.

I've also been busy shooting for Frank McEntire for his exhibit at CUAC Central Utah Art Center. The exhibit

Clarke Graduated!

He made it! He really did. Yesterday the 24th of May Clarke graduated with the rest of his class of 2007 from Timpview High School. And here is a picture to prove it. WAY TO GO CLARKE!

It's now onward and upward. Maybe now the lights at home will be off at a reasonable hour since the late night study sessions are a thing of the past. There were 4 students from Clarkes kindergarten class to his THS graduation class of 2007.

Hawkinson Photography & Terra Nova Gallery will both be closed for Memorial Day this weekend. Have a wonderful holiday. We'll open again on Tuesday morning.

THS Ballroom & Gallery Stroll

This Friday & Saturday the 4^th & 5^th of May is the Timpview High School Ballroom Dance Concert. Clarke, who many of you know, is a senior at THS and will be performing on stage for his last time there. He is excited and also a bit sad. Clarke will have a solo routine with his partner during the senior showcase part of the concert. Good luck Clarke!

For your information, tickets are $5.00 each or $3.00 with a student ID and are available at the door. The show begins at 7:30 PM. I’ll be going on Saturday night because Friday is the Gallery Stroll.

The Downtown Provo Gallery Stroll is from 6-9 PM this Friday, May 4^th. Our exhibit Trees by Barbara A. Lyman will be continuing. Barbara is planning on being here to meet with gallery patrons. Spring is back

The weather here in Provo is changing multiple times a day, it must be Spring! However, it appears like Spring is here at the gallery. Just as the trees in front of the gallery are in bloom, our exhibit by Barbara A. Lyman titled Trees in the gallery are also wonderful! Color, texture and movement are all here.

I went on a location shoot the other day for a client to the UVSC Woodbury Gallery. The show is their BFA 2007 student exhibit. The exhibit is up until the 27th and is worth going to see.

New Blog

I've always wanted to keep everyone updated with what's new here in the studio. And I even have a section on the site for that. However, the ease of updating often kept me from doing so.

For this reason (and everyone NEEDS needs to have a blog) I'm starting the new studio blog. Hopefully you will find this informative, fun, educational or maybe interesting.

I've uploaded new images for two artists. Dave Bown and James Gunter each have new work on their pages.
